The Garden of Morning Calm

The Garden of Morning Calm

Nestled in the picturesque Gapyeong County, The Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) is one of South Korea's most beautiful attractions. Renowned for its serene ambiance and stunning landscapes, this botanical garden offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

What is The Garden of Morning Calm?

The Garden of Morning Calm was created in 1996 by Professor Han Sang-kyung, a dedicated horticulturist and professor at Sahmyook University. His vision was to build a garden that embodied the essence of Korea's natural beauty and its cultural identity. He drew inspiration from a phrase in Sir Tagore’s poem referring to Korea as the "Land of Morning Calm," which describes the nation's tranquil and spiritual character.

Professor Han aimed to create a space that would showcase Korea's native plants and landscapes in a way that reflects the country's harmony and peace. Unlike traditional Western-style botanical gardens that emphasize symmetry and grandeur, The Garden of Morning Calm emphasizes natural beauty and flow.

The garden was meticulously designed to include over 5,000 species of plants, many of which are native to Korea. It also spans various themed sections, each carefully crafted to represent Korea's seasons, culture, and history. The layout draws on principles of Korean landscape architecture, blending traditional and modern design elements to create a harmonious balance.
